This month we are featuring Curtis Womack of CDW Consulting, an accounting and tax service provider at our Downtown Orlando location. We talked with Curtis about his business and successes, and got some advice for anyone thinking about jumping into the field.

Tell us about your company. What services do you provide?

Our primary focus is providing accounting and tax services to small businesses, not-for-profits and individuals. We provide controllership services and assist business owners and entrepreneurs with strategic planning and tax compliance.

When did you originally start your company?

We founded CDW Consulting, Inc. in March of 2003. That’s 12 years of accounting for the success of others!

What made you decide to start your own business?

We identified a need in the small business and not-for-profit communities, for professional accounting services at affordable rates.

What got you into accounting? Was it always something you were interested in or did it grow from something else?

I first began to pursue the accounting profession during my junior year in high school. I was looking in the local newspaper for a summer job and the first thing I saw was several ads for accountants. I asked my advisors about the profession and took an accounting class my senior year. I had a great teacher and decided to continue in the profession.

What do you like best about running your own business?

The appreciation of our clientele, and knowing that you have helped someone achieve their goals is very rewarding.

Do you have any particular success stories that have stuck with you for a long time?

My greatest success was convincing my wife that being with me was a good idea. She has stuck with me for a long time. Otherwise, managing the accounting department of a hedge fund was a very successful and rewarding experience. We were a small group and at our first Christmas party we all were able to sit at the same table and eat “family style.” Ultimately we moved from Wall Street, to Midtown Manhattan, and then to Stamford, Connecticut. The firm grew to be a multi-billion dollar operation under the vision of the founder, Steve Cohen. The more than 60 hour weeks that I put in during the early stages were a valuable part of the firm’s success.

What is the greatest challenge you face in running your business?

Change is constant. Keeping abreast of current tax laws and delivering a quality product to our clients on a consistent basis, while never missing a deadline.

Do you have any advice for anyone that’s planning on entering the finance field?

Proverbs 16:16 says: “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.” In the field of finance, or any vocation, the more you know, the more valuable you are. The silver and gold will follow.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spending time with my family is always my favorite thing to do.

What quote or saying do you live by?

The Bible verse found in the Book of Matthew, Chapter 6 and verse 33 says: “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
